Permanently Affordable Homes 永久可負擔住房

Chinatown has fewer than a hundred historic row houses that have been home to successive waves of immigrants from Ireland, Germany Eastern Europe, Syria, Lebanon, and China for the past two centuries. Many were emptied and converted to short-term rentals during the recent luxury development boom. Chinatown CLT seeks to preserve these smaller properties as permanently affordable homes and maintain core row house streets as anchors of the working-class community for generations to come. Chinatown CLT has converted its first three row houses into seven permanently affordable homeownership units and four rental units, and seeks additional opportunities to either purchase from or partner with row house owners that share our vision of a stable community.

Meet our CLT Homeowners 認識華埠土地信託會之家的居民

  • Meidan and Yin moved into 29 Oak Street in the summer of 2021 with their two young children. Before becoming first-time homebuyers, they were living in a three-bedroom apartment with two other households and Yin’s mother. Meidan explains what their new home means to them: “We feel a sense of security in our heart. Now we don’t face the threat of rising rents, and can live happily as a family.”

  • Eddie was the second homebuyer at 29 Oak Street. As a renter in Allston, he worried that he would need to leave Boston to find an affordable place to live and commute back to his job in the city. Now he and his partner are stably housed, and Eddie is the first CLT resident on our board! Eddie expressed his commitment to community ownership at one of our meetings: “I see this as an important way to pay it forward. This was truly life-changing for me, and I want it to be there for someone else in the future. Land trusts can help create opportunities for democratic community-based development that addresses the needs of people living in Boston in a way that is more agile and responsive than larger government initiatives.”

  • Hongxiu's family of three moved into 95 Hudson Street in the spring of 2023. As a new immigrant, she worked first in a restaurant, and later as a homecare worker. She shared a two-bedroom apartment with her parents, son, and sister in Chinatown. After her husband immigrated, the family had to leave Chinatown, and continued to face overcrowded conditions and rising rents. Now, Hongxiu is excited about their affordable home in Chinatown: “Chinatown has provided my family with a wealth of resources for job opportunities, language learning, and our son's education. We feel most comfortable here and are thrilled to put down roots. Our son can attend the Quincy School and access after-school programs. We can care for my elderly parents as they help us with childcare. I’m hopeful that my family’s future will continue to look up.”

  • David was our third homeowner at 29 Oak Street. As a long-time renter in South Boston and Jamaican Plain, he faced unpredictable rent hikes and the challenges of living with unfamiliar flatmates under month-to-month tenancy agreements. Now settled in Chinatown, David loves its central location, dynamic food scene and exciting nightlife. He cares deeply about the local community and broadening access to resources for Chinese-speaking residents. David is excited about continuing to live in Boston and grow his career: “My affordable home provides me with equity and stability. The days of roommate searching, moving around every September, and anxiety over rent hikes are behind me.”
